Robot Vacuum Cleaners: Your Vacuuming Wish Is Their Command

Posted by Jake Szarcosi on 7th August 2009

by Jake Szarcosi

With the invention of the robotic vacuum cleaner, the science fiction at last became a reality. For years man dreamed of a device that could clean up after him. That dream is now a reality.

The autonomous robotic vacuum cleaner has been in production for a few years already and is becoming more intelligent and advanced all the time. Each new generation of autonomous robotic vacuum cleaner is topping the last and there are presently millions of them in houses around the globe.

The robotic vacuum cleaning revolution has been pioneered by iRobot’s Roomba, but there are numerous alternatives on the market these days at prices ranging from one hundred dollars to one thousand dollars. But for the purposes of this article we will concentrate on the original of the species, the Roomba.

Robotic vacuum cleaners are small, disk-like units, usually measuring a bit over 13 inches across and about four inches high. They are often sold with a charging base and infrared transmitter units, called ‘virtual walls’.

The robotic vacuum utilizes its own infrared receiver and a sensitive bumper to find its way around a house. The ‘virtual walls’ can be set to stop the unit from cleaning certain rooms. The autonomous robotic vacuum cleaner can be turned on by hand or can be set to clean at certain times every day. In addition, the ‘virtual walls’ can be set to turn on and off to suit your schedule.

Roombas find their way around the home by using a number of basic formulas. Other makes of autonomous robotic vacuum cleaner actually map out houses and store the data, while others have dust detectors.

Once the autonomous robotic vacuum cleaner has completed its work, it returns to the re-charging station where it automatically refills its batteries and can be easily located.

Like any ultra-modern technology, autonomous robotic vacuum cleaners have had their problems, such as not working on heavy pile carpets or getting caught up in electrical cables. However, as the technology develops these problems are getting ironed out one by one and most of today’s cleaners are efficient and effective.

If you do choose to invest in a autonomous robotic vacuum cleaner be sure to pick one of good quality which has the required features to handle your house. Ideally, your autonomous robotic vacuum cleaner should hold sufficient power in one charge to clean your entire house. The vacuum should also have the ability to sense when it is changing from one type of surface to another and when it comes to sharp drops like staircases.

Autonomous robotic vacuum cleaners come with a variety of extra features, depending on how much you want to spend. These include schedulers, dirt detectors and the aforementioned ‘virtual walls’ and re-charging stations. Shop around and listen to other users’ experiences to find a decent robotic vacuum cleaner which will keep your home spick and span.

Buying a Full HD TV Considerations

Posted by Hermione Cook on 2nd August 2009

by Hermione Cook

It’s very probable that you have experienced many High Definition TV advertisements plastered all over magazines, internet and on TV. What you should realise is that not all HDTV is Full HD TV. There is a multitude of TV makes and models available which are capable of higher resolution pictures but are still not capable of Full HD Standards. These will not meet your desired expectations for example from BluRay DVDs. Before buying a TV make yourself aware of the facts to maximize your purchase and therefore your viewing experience.

You have choice of LCD or Plasma when buying a Full HD TV both types are available in 1080p or 1080i. This in itself can be confusing and the choice of specifications can soon become overwhelming. A 42 inch TV size is probably the most common size of television as they are suitable for most living rooms and other larger rooms. Cost obviously comes into it but with the price of HD TV decreasing all the take time to consider your options.

If youre considering a Full HD TV one of your first decisions is between Plasma and LCD sets. Full HD Plasma TV sets are known to have a better picture quality. LCD displays tend to have a longer life span than plasmas but due to improvements in plasma display quality and screen saving features, pixel burn is not really an issue and the expected viewing life of plasmas is not an issue for the average owner. Plasmas are however more expensive than their LCD equivalents.

By far the more prevalent HD technology is Full HD LCD TV. The issue of screen burn and shorter life span do not come into the equation with LCD televisions. These type of televisions have good quality pictures and refresh rates but the colours produced by plasma displays still outperform LCD TVs. Due to these qualities, Full HD LCD TV sets make it a great choice for gamers and the fast paced high detail action produced by modern games consoles. The generally cheaper prices of todays LCD TVs are also of benefit to shoppers with less to spend.

A HD TV converter is not all they are made out to be. The converter is capable transforming a high definition signal and outputting a signal that can be displayed on an old analogue television set. It can also work in reverse by taking an analogue signal and converting it as an output for a HD TV, the picture quality may be improved by the features of your Full HD TV set but at the end of the day it is still an analogue signal.

As previously discussed not all TVs that are sold as HD meet Full HD TV standards. You must be careful when making your choice of what set to purchase. Televisions sold as HD ready usually conform to the 720p specification. With 720p sets there is an improvement over standard analogue TVs but when compared to 1080p and 1080i there will be a noticeable improvement with the 1080 sets especially for larger screen sizes. 720p is not true full HD TV and is better suited to the smaller screens.

If youre in the market for a Full HD TV go for the TV sets which meet the 1080p or 1080i specifications. The 1080i specification has a 1280 by 1080 pixel resolution but the 1080p has a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution but with the progressive scanning you will notice a smoother picture. Because of the superior quality 1080p, the price can be higher but if this takes it out of your reach then 1080i still provides a high standard of picture suitable for most viewers.

Despite looking like a complicated affair, the decisions involved in buying a Full HD TV are quite simple. If you want the best viewing experience, a television to enhance your home gaming needs, and a set to do your Blu Ray DVDs justice. Then a full HD TV is the way to go, if you do your homework and choose wisely then you won’t need a second mortgage either.

Nitro RC Car - Useful Tips To Improve Performance

Posted by Sophie June Hayes on 25th July 2009

by Sophie June Hayes

There are many little things you can do to your nitro rc car that will make it run better and last a bit longer. Even by using just a few of these suggestions, you will see quite a bit of improvement in your model’s performance.

a) You are likely to find that the antenna tube is fairly brittle when new, just boil it in water for a couple of minutes so it is more flexible. This will make it easier to fit and but help stop it snapping when you flip your nitro rc car over!

b) Simply by gluing the tube to the mounting will help make sure it doesn’t work loose and disappear at speeds.

c) Use some insulation tape to secure your receiver pack batteries together so they do not work loose.

d) Seal the receiver box and any gaps where leads are visible with ordinary bathroom silicone sealant. Put a little on the bottom of the receiver box lid before you screw the lid down and a drop on the underside of the chassis top plate around the area where the servo and switch leads go into the box lid.

e) Use a zip tie threaded through the fuel tank lid on your nitro rc car to help you open the tank more easily.

f) Help keep the fuel tank shut by attaching an elastic band to the back of the tank and feed it under and up the front and attach it to the handle on the lid. This will tension the lid and help stop it coming open during use.

g) Help control the car in the air when jumping by giving a quick blast on the throttle to level it when it starts to nose dive. If it looks like it may land on its rear wheels, just brake a little.

h) If the model tends to flip when going around bends, try snipping the outside tread off the tyre to lessen the grip so it ’slides’ a bit more on the ground.

i) Ensure there is no leakage around the engine and manifold that would affect the engine power and performance of your nitro rc car. You can do simply this by using a silicon sealant (e.g. Hylomar) or a high-temperature gasket around the carburettor, the exhaust manifold to the exhaust port of the engine and to the rear plate or pull-start mechanism located near the engine block.

j) When using off-road models such as the Conquistador on long grass, screw the threaded collar on the shock body down to improve the ride height of the vehicle.

You will see an improvement in the performance of your nitro rc car just by following a few of the above tips and make it last longer. A little bit of effort now will pay dividends later!

LED Lamps And Their Advantages Over Traditional Lighting

Posted by Pedro Strovalinski on 23rd July 2009

by Pedro Strovalinski

An LED lamp uses light-emitting diodes instead of electrical filaments or gas as the source for illumination. The lamps normally consist of clusters of LEDs within a suitable housing and come in many different shapes, sizes and cap types that can fit directly into the lamp holders of the lamps they are replacing.

LEDs were first available in the 60s but were not used all that much. By the time the 70s came around however, they were being used in number of appliances, but not as general lighting because their output was so low. However they were used as indicators of one kind or another quite often.

To start with they came only in colours (blue, yellow, green, red & orange.) It was only in 1993 that the first white LED light was made by combining the lights that were the colour of the spectrum.

LED lamps live for much longer than traditional incandescent bulbs and run on a very low wattage. This means that there are considerable savings to be made on replacement bulbs and energy costs. Also there is no filament or tube inside that can break so they are instantly a lot more durable.

Another significant advantage LEDs have over standard incandescent bulbs is that they don’t use hazardous gases such as halogen or mercury, and also they are fully dimmable.

At the moment there are a few obstacles that LEDs need to overcome, particularly in the production process. They cannot be manufactured at a low enough price to be distributed among the masses yet. The process of depositing the active semiconductor layers stands to be improved in the future and if it is, then that will improve the overall production rate of LED lamps considerably.

Another drawback to LEDs that would be more noticeable by the user is the colour rendering index or CRI of LEDs. CRI is a measurement of how clean and white a light source is when compared with sunlight (which obviously has the top CRI of 100.) As it stands most affordable LEDs will have a CRI of around 70, which is far too low to provide quality indoor light. There are LEDs available with higher CRI but they aren’t available for the sort of price that everyone in the country will want to pay for light bulbs, so they are most likely not going to replace traditional bulbs just yet.

DIY Holograms Move from Hobby Kit to Science Toy

Posted by Paul Christie on 21st July 2009

by Paul Christie

Holograms have been making a big stir lately. From CNNs hologram coverage of the Obama/McCain 2008 Presidential election to the rumored possibilities of Michael Jackson completing posthumous tour dates in holographic form, the world of holography has been getting a lot of attention. And so, it is no surprise that the field of do-it-yourself (DIY) holograms is also moving forward, with new hologram-making kits that are more cool science gadget than mad scientist.

Making holograms used to be a monumental task, with corporations in the 60s and 70s spending millions on sophisticated lasers and delicate vibration-isolation equipment. As new techniques and technologies developed, it later became possible for home hobbyists to make holograms in their own basements or garage labs for a smaller investment of only thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours. At one point or another, almost every serious holographic amateur had stolen large quantities of sand from the local beach to build the ultimate homebuilt sand table,” used to dampen minute vibrations that typically destroy holograms.

But these earlier techniques for making holograms still required the dedication of a religious zealot and the darkroom chemical-mixing skills of a voodoo witchdoctor. With the advent of two new technologies, the laser diode and self-developing hologram film, holography has started to move beyond the dedicated hobbyist and into classrooms and homes everywhere.

Dramatic leaps in the development of laser diodes have created some very cheap but high-quality lasers that are perfect for DIY holograms. In addition, a company named Liti Holographics recently began producing a special self-developing film (think Polaroid film for holograms) that has completely removed the time-consuming film processing and hazardous chemicals from the hologram-making process. The unique film is simply exposed to the laser light for the correct amount of time, and then is ready to be viewed.

New developments in these two technologies are now making holograms affordable and easy for a much wider range of people, from gadget geeks, to grade school science fair projects, to teachers in the classroom.

Liti Holographics, through a division called LitiHolo, makes an all-inclusive hologram kit providing an entire hologram lab in a box. Included in the kit is a special laser diode and 20 film plates for making holograms. The rig is easy to put together and compact, with laser-cut parts that fit together perfectly to line everything up.

The hologram kit has a quick-start guide for those more comfortable with gadget assembly, or there are the detailed step-by-step instructions that go from set up to finished holograms. Either way, your first holograms could be ready for viewing in less than an hour. The LitiHolo hologram kit sells for $99 at litiholo.com, and is also sold through distributors including ThinkGeek and Scientifics Online.

The science of holograms has not yet caught up to the science fiction of movies like Star Wars and Star Trek, but it is impacting our lives more and more everyday. And while you still can’t create a “holodeck” in your living room with a hologram kit, it holds the key to breeding the next generation of holographic innovations and holographic scientists by making the technology easily accessible to bright, creative minds. Perhaps the headline in the near future will read, “Hologram Science Toy Leads to Hologram Breakthrough.

Benefits Of Using LED Lighting

Posted by Tom Norman on 19th July 2009

An LED lamp uses light-emitting diodes instead of electrical filaments or gas as the source for illumination. They were first made available in the sixties and were being used in many different pieces of equipment by the seventies. However these early LEDs only produced a very dim light and so were not used for lighting in general, but were often used as indicators.

To start with they came only in colours (blue, yellow, green, red & orange.) It was only in 1993 that the first white LED light was made by combining the lights that were the colour of the spectrum.

Older light bulbs like the ones still used in homes around the world have a very short life compared to LED lamps, and run on a much higher wattage, making LED lamps more cost effective in an energy efficiency sense, in terms of lifespan, and durability as there’s no filament or tube to break.

LEDs do not contain any dangerous gases like mercury or halogen and are fully dimmable so they hold yet more advantages over their more conventional predecessors.

There are however some drawbacks to LEDs at the moment. The way that they are produced hasn’t developed enough for it to be cost effective enough to sell LEDs on a widespread basis. If the process of depositing the active semiconductor layers could be improved, then the overall output of the LED production process would be considerably improved.

Another drawback to LEDs that would be more noticeable by the user is the colour rendering index or CRI of LEDs.
