More modern models of phones have internal antennas which have all the benefits of an external antenna with one major tactical benefit: an internal antenna is much more sturdy and robust due to the fact that it is not exposed to the elements as much as its external counterparts. Any electronic gadget is as useful and as durable as its weakest element, and the major problem with the external antenna is that once it is broken, the entire unit is out of commission.
